I can remember the very day I came to do my intro class at CrossFit Prime. My then boyfriend and I at the time (Now I locked that shit down and get to call him my husband) had moved to Pennsylvania from Florida a few months prior and we were feeling relatively undetermined and not so motivated, as well as enjoying all this delicious food from “The North”. It was time to try something new. We both come from athletic backgrounds with myself playing competitive soccer for over 10 years and Ryan ventured into a variety of EEEsports such as wrestling, rock climbing, and ultimate frisbee (Yes that’s a thing…). In college we both joined UCF’s Triathlon team and really enjoyed training and competing together. When we showed up in October 2012 we did not know anyone at the gym and walked in just looking to see what was up with this whole CrossFit thing. Being a very competitive person in nature I was shocked at how intimidated I felt that first day. Even with an athletic background I had never done a pull up or even heard of a snatch nor a clean and jerk. Filling out my waiver and writing down my three previous knee surgeries made me a little hesitant if I could handle this type of exercise. We signed up for a ten class trial and I remember around the 4th class I told Ryan we were never leaving. Here we are three years later, growing day by day both as athletes and as people.
Since having been a CrossFit addict for a few years now, I often drop into other gyms while away. What makes Prime unique are the people that created it as well as the members who have now become my family. Any gym can buy new shiny equipment or have the coolest and latest gear but nothing can replace the people that you spend time with and train with. I remember pushing myself harder each week to get to where I wanted to be, and still do now, and that would not have been possible without the education, encouragement and dedication of the trainers as well as other members at Prime. The best part of this gym is the people who walk in and out of the door. We all come from different backgrounds, have different goals, and hit different struggles along the way. Regardless of these variables you can walk into the gym knowing full and well everyone there wants you to succeed and genuinely cares about each person’s individual goals. It has been seen time after time when a member gets their first muscle up and the gym erupts knowing how hard that individual worked, or when a newer member gets their first pull up, overcomes the fear of kicking upside down to the wall, the list goes on. All of these accomplishments, big or small, are victories that we all celebrate for one another. Nothing can replace the amount of heart at Prime.
Most people join a gym looking to get healthy and maybe even lose some weight. For myself, it was much more about becoming healthy both physically and mentally. I have always been interested in health as I am an RN and now a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Since joining Prime I have learned so much valuable information about nutrition and creating a healthy foundation, much of which I never learned even in grad school. Looking back at where I came from both my body and mindset have grown and changed for the better. I have put on a decent amount of weight, fifteen pounds to be exact (‘USDA Grass-Fed Meat’ as Ryan likes to call it) and my knee feels better than ever. I have gone from being unhealthily skinny, and as Mark called it when he first reviewed my food journal naming it the “White Girl Diet”, come a long way from the list of cheerios, hamburger helper meals and salad from a box. Since then I have become a nutrition junkie and have overcome a handful of concerns that may not have otherwise been possible. I am now a long ways away from cutting calories, living off egg whites and not eating before a trip to the beach and instead drink raw milk, live for a runny yolk and value the nutrients in real, whole foods. Sitting here writing this I again realize how grateful I am to have joined this family as it is so much more than just a gym. Since joining Prime Ryan has lost about 35 pounds and feels stronger and healthier than ever. The best part about all of this is that it is really just the beginning to a healthy life ahead filled with the best of friends, PR’s and creating health through nutrition. One of the best decisions I ever made was to join CrossFit Prime, trust in the process and learn as much as I could.
