Stimulus and Strategy:
Today’s workout is a chipper. Aim to complete this effort in 15 minutes or less. The loading of the barbell should be light-to-moderate for the deadlifts and moderate-to-heavy for the squat cleans. This means you should be able to consistently perform larger chunks of reps on the deadlifts and singles for the squat cleans. Manage your pace on the rower in anticipation of the final two movements. Don’t push too hard on the rower and end up putting yourself in a “hole” for the remainder of the workout.

Scaling:
Reduce the loading of the barbell. Reduce the reps of each of the movements.

To reduce the complexity of deadlifts, perform sumo deadlifts. This will reduce the difficulty in navigating the knees. For the pull-ups, reduce the range of motion. For the squat cleans, consider hang squat cleans or a power cleans.

In case of injury or limitation, for the deadlifts, consider kettlebell sumo deadlifts or unloaded good mornings. For the pull-ups, consider ring rows. For the squat cleans, consider dumbbell squat cleans or dumbbell power cleans if there is a squat limitation. For the row, use whatever machine is available to perform the calories.

In the squat clean, drive your hips forward, squeeze your glutes at the top, and make sure you finish the pull before pulling under the bar.

Really focused on my deadlift technique today, as well as the squat clean. Learned this past weekend at the CF-L1, my technique was a little off and has been my whole life, so that’s awesome we could fix that.

Deads 15-10-10-10-5, pull-ups 15-10-10-5, row in ~2 min, C2B 5-5-5-3-2. Tried to pace and take the row easier than usual, but 185 was just too much today for the cleans. As it was, I missed a few at 165.

Rxd intended at the Y. The rower I setup was taken from me mid workout so I just jumped on the elliptical next to it for 30 cals.

Squat cleans took a while. I checked the clock at 15m and I was at 4 reps so I must’ve rested about 30 sec per rep on those. Pull-ups in sets of 8 and ctb in sets of 5

I enjoy not having a series of exercises or a time domain to go through... I do my own flow on my sweet time, depending how I feel, how much time I have... Think about warming up the wod, but scale it way down to simple stuff and then gradually increase complexitg, load, speed, etc. This way u'll have a good feeling how to scale the wod. Anyway, its always a work in progress as we age... ;)

Clearly I misfired on my earlier comment! A couple other thoughts, as my workout-addled mind tries to recalibrate after today...

Yes, Mike posted a link to Coach's article on warming up. I've seen other CF-approved warmups that include shoulder sweeps, but basically the same as what Mike posted, and its worked for me for a long time.

But beyond that, precribing a daily warmup would be challenging, as each of our bodies have different warmup needs. In my 20s, warmups...well, I didn't do them. Now in my 60s, I have a LOT of warmup/PT-related stuff to do, even before I start preparing for the WOD-specific movements. Not sure how HQ would be able to give us anything meaningful to most of us.

Jim - I am similar! Workouts in my 20s I remember not lifting anything and going right into heavy sets thinking that my muscles would be the strongest without any fatigue!


I also agree with Luis, I typically do specific exercises around the target at lighter weights until I hit RXd and then feel ready. Sometimes I have practically no time and can’t even do that!
